Fresh Tension As DRC Troops, M23 Fighting Resumes

Written by on June 16, 2022

Following additional clashes between the Congolese army, backed by friendly militia, and the M23 rebels in Rutshuru region on Thursday morning, there is increased tension in Bunagana town council’s Kisoro district. Around 3 a.m., gunfire erupted less than a kilometer from the rebel-controlled border, which has been under their control since Monday.

The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDRL), Mai Mai, and Nyatura militias are assisting Congolese government forces. In the hills near the border, government troops and militia fighters were shooting, while the rebels fired back to maintain their border position.

The gunfight lasted until around 1:00 p.m., when the government troops and militia stopped firing.
