Butaleja district authorities have suspended all football tournaments following the death of a man during a football tournament last week.
Waligwa Mustafa, 25, a resident of Tinda village Namawa parish was allegedly assaulted by unknown people during a football tournament at Naminasa Primary School playground. The tournament was organized by leaders in the district to select teams that will take part in the Christmas Football competition.
It’s reported that Waligwa died after an argument broke out with his friends on which team will win. The deceased was supporting Busaba Football club while his friends Budumba Football Club. During the argument, one of Waligwa’s friends allegedly punched him on the head and fell down.
Waligwa was rushed to Nabiganda Health Center IV where he died shortly.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the deceased developed a misunderstanding with Charles George, also a resident of Tinda village, for supporting a different team.
Julius Mubi, the Butaleja Deputy Resident District Commissioner says that they have resolved to suspend all football tournaments in the area. He says that whenever there is a football tournament, rival fans clash.
The police are still investigating the case of murder that was reported by the deceased’s father under reference number CRB266/2021.
