FUFA Extends Paul Put’s Tenure as Uganda Cranes Head Coach to 2028
Kampala, 6 November 2025 — The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has announced the renewal of Belgian tactician Paul Joseph Put’s contract, keeping him at the helm of the Uganda Cranes until 2028.
A vote of confidence ahead of a major campaign
Put, who was originally unveiled as Uganda’s head coach on 2 November 2023, has been rewarded with the multi-year extension after steady progress under his stewardship and amid preparations for Africa’s top competitions. FUFA confirmed the decision at a press briefing held in Kampala, where officials praised Put’s vision and the momentum the team has built during his tenure.
What FUFA said
In its official statement, FUFA described the contract renewal as an endorsement of the technical direction Put has set for the national team. The federation highlighted continuity, stability and a long-term project aimed at consolidating Uganda’s presence on the continental stage.
Put’s impact so far
Since his arrival in November 2023, Put has overseen squad restructures, scouting initiatives and a series of friendlies and qualifying assignments designed to broaden Uganda’s player pool and tactical options. Supporters and pundits point to improved organization and a clearer tactical identity as immediate gains, while critics note the coach’s controversial history in other assignments — a subject FUFA says it considered before concluding that the long-term potential outweighs risk.
What’s next for the Cranes
With Put now secured through 2028, FUFA expects the coaching staff to focus on youth integration, finalizing preparations for upcoming AFCON cycles and strengthening Uganda’s competitiveness in CAF events. The federation also indicated a renewed emphasis on domestic scouting and collaboration with clubs to ensure a steady pipeline of talent into the national set-up.
