NRM Candidates in Rakai Decry Lack Of Funds For Campaigns

National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidates vying in the by-elections and residual elections in Rakai district have decried the lack of funds to canvass for votes.
Nine people are contesting for the four positions including the Kifamba Male Youth Councilor, Female Elderly Representative for Lwentulege Town council, PWD Female Councilor for Lwamaggwa Town council, and Female Elderly Representative for Mweruka Town council. Three people namely Alex Kiweewa (NRM), Sharif SSaku (NUP) and Yosam Ssuuna (independent) are contesting for the post of Kifamba Male Youth Councilor.
Others are Jawuria Nakuya (NRM) and Teddy Nalugemwa (independent) for the post of Female Elderly Representative for Lwentulege Town council, Nowelina Namugga (NRM) and Erivania Namazzi (independent) for the Female Elderly Representative for Mweruka Town council while Milly Nakajwala (NRM) and Jovian Kabarokore (Independent) were nominated for the PWD Female Councilor for Lwamaggwa Town council.
The NRM candidates say that the lack of funds for their campaigns could affect their performance.
According to Alex Kiweewa, says that money is a key factor in every election in terms of printing posters, t-shirts, banners, hiring a public address system and paying campaigners. Kiweewa adds that he had expected to get support from the NRM party leaders in the district and NRM party headquarters.
Nowelina Namugga noted that she has no money for posters and public address system but she is exploiting her good reputation and fame to gain support. Namugga says that she has not received support from the district party headquarters but that will not derail her hopes of winning the race.
Ssaku says that he has no money for campaigns and he is capitalizing on people’s support to win the Kifamba male youth councilor seat. He explains that NUP has overwhelming support in Kifamba.
Elisa Wangi Ssemanda, the Rakai NRM Secretary, says they are aware of the financial challenges faced by all their candidates in the by-election. He adds that they will meet Richard Todwong, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary-General, and other party leaders from the secretariat on how to address all the challenges of funding. The by-elections are scheduled to take place on December 16.
