NUP, NRM Candidates Start Open Campaigns in Kayunga By-election

Candidates of the National Unity Platform and National Resistance Movement NRM party have started open campaigns to canvass votes in the race for the LCV chairperson of Kayunga.
The race attracted six candidates including Andrew Muwonge of the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party, Harriet Nakwede of the National Unity Platform-NUP, Anthony Waddimba from the Democratic Party-DP and independent candidates; Boniface Bandikubi, Majid Nyanzi and Jamil Kamoga. They are all seeking to replace Feffeka Serubogo, who died just months after taking office.
Although Muwonge and Nakwedde are holding open-air campaigns, the other candidates have opted for a door-to-door strategy. The campaigns however have attracted large processions although the Electoral Commission directed that all candidates must observe COVID-19 guidelines which barred gatherings of more than 200 people.
Muwonge’s campaigning team is headed by the NRM Director of Mobilisation RoseMary Seninde, Publicity Emmanuel Ddombo and Hajjat Faridah Kibowa, the Party National Women’s Chairperson. They started the campaigns in Nazigo sub-county on Thursday, where Muwonge pledged to promote unity among district leaders and technocrats, introduce special youths’ employment opportunities and solve persistent land wrangles.
Harriet Nakwede started campaigns in Kitimbwa Town Council promising to transform the district’s education sector, lobbying markets for farmers, improving the road network and ending land wrangles. She said that she expects a team from the NUP secretariate to join her today, Friday, to officially launch the campaigns at Kangulumira.
Anthony Waddimba of the Democratic Party says his campaigns would start today in Kitimbwa Town council where he expects to have a delegation from the party secretariat while Kamoga and Bandikubi said that the door-to-door campaigns would help them avoid the spread of COVID-19 but also give them a chance to have a close interaction with the electorate.
