Gateway Bus Driver Arrested As Police Investigates Cause of Fire.

The Police have arrested the bus driver of the Gateway Bus that caught fire on Tuesday.

The bus carrying 37 passengers from Kampala to Kabale caught fire at around midday at Kamengo, Mpigi District causing heavy traffic which lasted for more than 3 hours.

Police in Mpigi says that Sam Egulirwa is being held to help in the investigations into the cause of the fire that destroyed property and the bus.

Faridah Namppima, the Spokesperson of the Traffic Police said that all the 37 passengers on board the bus managed to exit the bus before it was entirely engulfed by the fire.

Before he was arrested, Egulirwa complained against the police’s delay to help put out the fire yet the incident happened near a police checkpoint.

An eye witness Ronald Katende, a trader who was traveling in a car behind the bus said that the fire started with smoke which forced the bus to stop and the passengers escaped unhurt.

At 4:30 pm, another bus from Gateway Bus Company was dispatched to transport the stranded passengers to their intended destinations.
