Kira Municipal council has passed a resolution for elevation to city status.

The Municipal Mayor, Julius Mutebi Nsubuga moved the motion for the elevation of the municipality to a cultural and religious city.

He explained that elevating Kira municipality to city status will enhance the tourism potential associated with the annual pilgrimage to Namugongo Matyrs shrines.

Mutebi explains that once they get a city they expect to get improved Infrastructure and services.

Mark Sserunjogi Mukiibi, the Kimwanyi ward councillor supported the motion, saying that Kira municipality is developing at a high speed.

Abdulsalam Ssebadduk, the Butto ward councillors argued that much as they are pushing for city status, they can’t meet some of the requirements. He explained that to get a city status, they require a population of over 500,000 inhabitants, which isn’t the case for Kira municipality.

Herbert Kintu, the Kira and Kito ward councillor asked his colleague not to be excited by their desire for city status, saying even other areas elevated to city status are still struggling to operate.

Nuru Nakabugo, the Kireka Railway ward councillor asked his colleagues to own the motion, saying that some of them have a habit of disowning council motions.

The Kira Municipality speaker, Frank Ssemukuye, said that they don’t have sufficient information on how to attain city status. He asked the technical team to get guidance from the Local Government Ministry and Wakiso district.
