Under Serum Africa Medical Research Institute (SAMRI) Uganda will start to manufacture its own vaccines which will lead it into top performing and farther topping African countries in medical care and health atlearge .
This has come to existence after SAMRI delegation met with HE The President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at State House Nakasero, Kampala. The meeting delegation comprised Professor Francis Omaswa, Chair of SAMRI Board of Directors, Professor Anand Iyer, Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Capt. Mike Mukula, Board member and Dr George Pariyo Project Officer and Dr.Musenero who represented all lined ministries.
A Memorundum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the Hon. Dr Musenero for the Government of Uganda and by Prof. Francis Omaswa for SAMRI. The MOU outlines a framework for co-operation between the Government of Uganda and SAMRI for research, development, manufacturing and marketing of vaccines and other related therapeutic products in Uganda.
Professor Anand Iyer says after the spread of the deadly Corona Virus that sperked off from Chaina in 2019, developed countries that managed to innovate the technology that helped them to manafacture the vaccines that they hardly shared with African countries which prompted SAMRI to come in and end the starvation for vaccines and the vaccines to be considered in production are COVID 19, Polio, and other killer disease and AIDS to be considered as priority to end importation of these vaccines .
On this, all medicationes and vaccines will be cheaper and available on market which will also earn Uganda revenue and employment to Ugandans and it will be moved to other parts of Africa.
The project will cost 300 million dollars and its expected to start by April 2022 and by the end of the year
SAMRI’s Vision is to become the preeminent vaccines and biological research, development & manufacturing center in Uganda in particular and Africa
