On the 27-September of this year President Museveni renewed his decade-old push to scrap bail for suspected capital offenders, prompting constitutional and political experts to warn that the move could boomerang since it threatens the presumption of a suspect’s innocence until proven guilty*
The Democratic Party through its its National Executive Council (NEC) that sat yesterday cameup with a resolution aiming to protect article 23(6)a, b and c of the constitution from being attacked by the President and wrote latter which they delivered to the Electoral Commission seeking to motion the right of citizens to ask for a referendum.
In the latter DP continues that removing the right to bail or to apply for bail contravenes the laws of natural justice, one is condemned guilty before trial.
With this, these strongly believe that the people of Uganda should determine whether or not the right to bail is scrapped.
Following the latter these also will traverse the country to gather at least two million signatures of registered voters petitioning the electoral commission to organise a referendum regarding the question of bail whereafter court will be petitioned to bar Parliament from discussing the matter that is scheduled for a referendum
