Sixty-five-year-old Ruparelia was vaccinated at UMC Victoria Hospital in Bukoto, which is one of the designated vaccination sites in Kampala. He falls under the category of people aged over 50, who are considered most at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

According to the health ministry, Uganda is rolling out free COVID-19 vaccination ‘in a staggered manner’, which started with health workers.

The ministry is urging people to ‘ensure that you get the vaccine when your time comes’, offering assurance that the vaccine is ‘safe and effective’.

Starting on March 21, the health ministry has been offering free vaccination but due to the limited number of the AstraZeneca vaccine, the inoculation has started with the people who are most at risk of contracting COVID-19

.

They are health workers, teachers, security personnel, people aged over 50, people aged 18-50 with underlying conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart, kidney or liver disease.

In all the districts outside of Kampala, the health ministry says COVID-19 vaccination is taking place at designated health centre IIIs, IVs, general hospitals and regional referral hospitals.

Uganda’s COVID-19 infection report card indicates 14 new confirmed cases from tests done on Tuesday, March 23, which means the cumulative confirmed cases are now 40,734. As many as 334 people have succumbed to the virus while 15,147 have recovered.
